How to Prepare for Ultrasound Examinations?

Vessels Ultrasound: renal arteries, abdominal aorta and its branches, portal vein, iliac vessels

  • 3 days before the examination, patients must exclude products that cause bloating (peas, cabbage, apples, black bread, fermented dairy products, etc.) from the diet;

  • patients must have a bowel movement the day before the examination;

  • patients with an excessive production of intestinal gas must take espumisan 2 capsules 3 times a day and 2 capsules on the day of the study;

  • patients taking antihypertensive medications must have breakfast at the usual time;

  • ultrasound is carried out on an empty stomach - patients must not eat and drink anything for 6 hours before the examination (for patients with diabetes, the study is carried out in the morning)

Pelvic Vessels Ultrasound

  • patients with an excessive production of intestinal gas must take tablets of activated charcoal or Espumisan or Filtrum according to the instruction;

  • ultrasound is carried out on an empty stomach - patients must not eat and drink anything for 6 or 8 hours before the examination;

Bowel Ultrasound

  • 3 days before the examination, patients must exclude products such as black bread, whole milk, raw fruits and vegetables from the diet;

  • patients with an excessive production of intestinal gas must take 2 or 4 tablets of activated charcoal or Espumisan or Filtrum according to the instruction;

  • on the evening before the examination, patients must have a cleansing enema containing 1.5-2 litres of liquid at room temperature

Stomach Ultrasound

Kidney and Adrenal Gland Ultrasound

  • patients must not drink more than 100 ml of waters and to take diuretics

Ultrasound Liver Elastography

  • ultrasound is carried out on an empty stomach - patients must not eat and drink anything for 6 or 8 hours before the examination;

Bladder and Ureters Ultrasound

  • patients may be asked to drink four to six glasses of liquid about an hour before the test to fill their bladder. Patients may be asked to avoid eating for eight to 12 hours before the test to avoid gas buildup in the intestines.

  • patients must drink 1-1.5 litres of any liquid 1-1.5 hours before the ultrasound examination and arrive at their appointment with a comfortably full bladder

  • if patients’ bladder is uncomfortably full, they may relieve themselves and fill their bladder once again to make it full by their examination

  • patients must avoid urinating for 1-2 hours before their appointment if possible (for some people this may be impossible so please do not worry if that is the case)

Pelvic Organs Ultrasound (transvaginal)

  • patients must empty their bladder just before the examination

  • genital hygiene

Pelvic Organs Ultrasound through the Abdominal Wall (abdominal)

  • patients must drink 1-1.5 litres of any liquid 1-1.5 hours before the ultrasound examination and arrive at your appointment with a comfortably full bladder

  • if patients’ bladder is uncomfortably full, they may relieve themselves and fill their bladder once again to make it full by their examination

Breast Ultrasound

  • examination is done between the 5th and 12th day of the menstrual cycle

  • in case of the absence of menstrual period, the examination may be done on any day

Fetal Ultrasound

  • early pregnancy – up to 11 weeks (no special preparation is required)

  • first trimester screening – at 12-13 weeks (no special preparation is required)

  • second trimester screening – at 18-21 weeks (no special preparation is required)

  • third trimester screening – at 30-34 weeks (no special preparation is required)

Prostate Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)

  • on the evening before the examination, patients must have a cleansing enema containing 1.5-2 litres of liquid at room temperature or 1.5 or 2 hours before the examination have one Microlax enema
